The Tale of The Marsh Kids
One day in early October, we were walking our dogs along the road that
you see in these pics, when we came to a small clearing. There were 2
tuxedo cats hiding in the brush, covered in ice and so completely
terrified.
My husband and I ran back to the house to get some food and bring
down a few carriers to see if we could help. We didn't know what a feral
cat was. We had been feeding a stray at our home but we never saw
cats this terrified of humans. We simply didn't know what to do.
We decided to go back every single day and see if we could find them.
Everyday I would drive down with warm food and water and call for
them. "Babies!". They eventually came to know my voice and came
running to eat.
The little kitten must have been 4 months old when we first met her and
she was so incredibly happy to see us. Covered in ice, starving, and
scared she always came running with a spring in her step. We named
her Happy. The other tuxedo who guarded her was a male! I had no idea
males raised the babies but he never left her side. He always let her eat
her fill before he rushed in to feed. We named him Scout.
Gary and I had no idea what to do with wild cats. Afterall we had cats of
our own to consider. We called the shelters and other groups to ask for
help and were turned away.No one wanted to deal with feral cats. So we
decided to build them a dog house to get them through the winter. We
fed them everyday and tried to get them used to us.
After a few weeks of going, we noticed more and more cats coming out
when we called! There were 2, then 5, then 10. Everyday a few more as
the word went out that the food was good and the humans were safe. I
made it my business to try to befriend these kids. My heart broke for
them. They seemed to like me but they wouldn't get within 8 feet of me. I
had no idea what to do. But I knew I needed to learn fast.

My husband Gary and I tend to 2 specific groups of cats
every day. One clan lives near our home. The other clan we
affectionately call The Marsh Kids. I will tell you the tale
of each clan.
